However, bonobo females differ as they remain sexually receptive for extended periods, displaying a bright pink genital swelling that is not an accurate indicator of ovulation.
Researchers studied a wild bonobo community at Wamba in the Luo Scientific Reserve to understand how males navigate this complex system. They meticulously documented daily sexual interactions and assessed the degree of genital swelling in females. By collecting urine samples, the researchers were able to identify the precise timing of ovulation, revealing that the likelihood of ovulation was highest between 8 and 27 days after a female reached maximum swelling.
Males’ Adaptive Strategies
The study found that male bonobos have adapted to this unpredictable system by utilizing a combination of fertility signals. Males focus their mating efforts on females who have reached maximum swelling earlier and who have older infants, indicators that suggest a higher likelihood of ovulation. This adaptive strategy allows males to improve their chances of reproductive success, despite the absence of a precise fertility signal.
“Bonobo males, instead of trying to predict precise ovulation timing, use a flexible strategy,” the authors note. This adaptability highlights how even imprecise signals can remain evolutionarily beneficial when animals use them flexibly. The persistence of these signals over evolutionary timescales suggests that there has been little pressure for them to become more accurate.
The Persistence of Imperfect Signals
The findings of this study suggest that the imperfect fertility signals in bonobos may have persisted because they still provide some functional value. The combination of swelling patterns and knowledge of a female’s reproductive history allows males to make fairly accurate estimates of fertility.
