Unveiling the Brightest X-Ray Light Source

HEPS is designed to generate beams of light that are a trillion times brighter than the sun’s surface, offering researchers unparalleled detail and precision. The facility, located approximately 30 miles north of Beijing, is expected to begin operations later this year. Once operational, HEPS will power cutting-edge research, allowing scientists to observe and manipulate matter at a microscopic level.

The civil construction of HEPS was completed in August 2024, and the facility has since entered the light commissioning phase. This crucial step involves testing and fine-tuning the system with real photon beams, ensuring readiness for trial operations. According to Pan Weimin, project director at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of High Energy Physics, “Once HEPS reaches its designed brightness, it will be capable of revealing the microscopic world in unprecedented detail.”

The facility’s brightness is anticipated to be significantly higher than existing counterparts, such as the Extremely Brilliant Source in France. Pan Weimin and his team have emphasized the importance of independent innovation in the development of HEPS. The introduction of a novel injection and extraction method enhances efficiency and minimizes environmental impact. By recycling low-energy electron beams and merging them with fresh particles, HEPS conserves energy and improves beam quality.

This new facility will complement the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), China’s premier third-generation light source. Since its launch in 2009, SSRF has supported thousands of experiments annually, hosting over 10,000 researchers. However, the growing demand for beamline access has led to long wait times, a challenge HEPS is poised to address by providing additional capacity.

With HEPS nearing completion, China is set to lead the world in next-generation light source technology, pushing the boundaries of what scientists can achieve in various fields.
