The winter virus season in the United States is in full swing, with flu cases surging to levels not seen in over a decade. One key indicator of flu activity—the percentage of doctor visits due to flu-like symptoms—has surpassed the peak of any season since the 2009-2010 swine flu pandemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
While other respiratory illnesses can mimic flu symptoms, recent data suggests that COVID-19 cases are trending downward. Additionally, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), which had been widespread earlier in the season, appears to be declining on a national scale.
School Closures Due to Flu Outbreaks
The flu’s impact has been severe enough to force temporary school closures in some states. In Texas, the Godley Independent School District, which serves 3,200 students near Fort Worth, shut down for three days after an alarming 650 students and 60 staff members fell ill. According to district spokesperson Jeff Meador, flu cases dominated the outbreak, alongside some instances of strep throat. He described it as the worst flu season he could recall.
Flu Statistics and Regional Impact
The CDC estimates that this flu season has already resulted in at least 24 million infections, 310,000 hospitalizations, and 13,000 deaths, including 57 pediatric fatalities. Historically, flu activity peaks in February, but this season’s intensity has already reached alarming levels.
Last week, 43 states reported high or very high flu activity, with the most severe outbreaks occurring in the South, Southwest, and western regions. In Rochester, New York, the flu season has been particularly active, though pediatric emergency medicine expert Dr. Elizabeth Murray noted that RSV and COVID-19 cases are still affecting young patients.
“All respiratory illnesses seem to be circulating aggressively,” she remarked.
Vaccination Rates and Preventative Measures
Health officials continue to stress the importance of flu vaccinations, recommending that everyone aged six months and older receive an annual flu shot. However, vaccination rates remain stagnant. This season, about 44% of U.S. adults have received flu shots, a figure consistent with last year. Meanwhile, flu vaccine coverage for children has dropped to around 45%, lower than the usual 50% rate seen in previous years.
COVID-19 vaccination rates also remain relatively low, with only 23% of adults up to date on their vaccines as of late January, showing a slight increase from 20% the previous year. Pediatric COVID-19 vaccination rates have remained unchanged at approximately 12%.
Flu Strains and Emerging Concerns
Lab tests indicate that the dominant flu strains this season are Type A H1N1 and Type A H3N2. Meanwhile, health officials are closely monitoring a third strain, Type A H5N1, commonly known as bird flu. Although this strain has led to the deaths of millions of animals, only 67 human infections have been recorded in the U.S. thus far.
Tips to Reduce Risk of Infection
To minimize the risk of contracting seasonal illnesses, medical experts recommend avoiding touching the face, frequently washing hands with soap and water, and disinfecting high-contact surfaces. Additionally, staying away from individuals who show symptoms of illness can help prevent the spread of flu and other respiratory viruses.
As flu season continues, health authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their communities.
