IN A NUTSHELL
  • 🚁 Greece has ordered eight H215 helicopters from Airbus Helicopters to strengthen its emergency response capabilities.
  • 💡 The acquisition is part of the national “Aegis” program, financed by European funds and operated under a GO-CO model.
  • 🔥 The H215 helicopters are equipped to combat forest fires, carrying up to 19 firefighters and performing water drops of over 8,800 pounds.
  • 🌍 This strategic purchase aims to enhance Greece’s ability to respond to the increasing threat of climate-induced disasters.

In recent years, Greece has taken significant strides to bolster its emergency response capabilities, especially in the face of increasingly severe climate-induced challenges. One notable step is the acquisition of eight H215 helicopters from Airbus Helicopters, with an option for two more. This move is part of the national “Aegis” program, led by the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. The purchase is financed by European funds and follows a government-owned, contractor-operated (GO-CO) model. This innovative approach ensures that while the state retains ownership of the helicopters, operational management is entrusted to specialized companies like Airtelis and SAF Hélicoptères.

Technical Features Designed for Emergency Intervention

The H215 helicopter, part of the renowned Super Puma family, is a powerful asset in emergency interventions. With over 1,100 units delivered worldwide and more than 6 million flight hours, the H215 is a proven choice for firefighting missions in Greece. It can carry up to 19 firefighters and perform water drops exceeding 8,800 pounds. Two configurations are available: a suspended bambi bucket or an integrated belly tank.

The helicopter’s twin-engine setup, paired with a four-axis autopilot system inherited from the H225, offers remarkable stability even in extreme conditions. Notably, missions can be conducted both day and night, thanks to its advanced navigation system. With a range of 620 miles and an autonomy exceeding two hours, the H215 covers vast areas without frequent refueling—a decisive advantage when tackling multiple fires on rugged terrain.

An Operational System Already Proven

Greece’s collaboration with Airbus is not new, as the country already operates Super Pumas within its firefighter brigades and air forces. This new acquisition allows Greece to harmonize its fleet around a familiar ecosystem, facilitating maintenance, training, and spare parts availability. SAF Hélicoptères and Airtelis will play central roles in operating the H215s. These companies are experienced in complex missions such as mountain rescues, firefighting, and humanitarian operations. In 2024, SAF even deployed an H215 under the European RescEU mechanism in Greece. Airtelis, diversifying from power line maintenance to emergency intervention, brings over 60 years of expertise to the table.

“268 Olympic Pools Below Ground”: World’s Largest Hidden Reservoir Discovered in Shocking Subterranean Water Breakthrough

A Concrete Response to Climate Change

The selection of the H215 is a direct response to a pressing need. Forest fires have destroyed between 1.2 and 1.9 million square miles globally in recent years, affecting ecosystems, local climates, and endangering human lives. In Greece, where summers are increasingly arid, the intensity and frequency of fires continue to rise. This acquisition strengthens Greece’s rapid response capabilities nationwide. The GO-CO model offers increased flexibility, enabling immediate deployment of helicopters without awaiting traditional administrative cycles.

Positive Side Effects for the Local Industry

The contract also includes the training of technicians and pilots in Greece, reinforcing the country’s strategic autonomy. Building local expertise is crucial for ensuring the fleet’s sustainability. Simultaneously, existing maintenance centers for Super Pumas will benefit economically from increased operational volumes. Airbus Helicopters, a long-time supplier of military and civilian helicopters to Greece since the 2000s, is committed to long-term support with a strengthened local presence.

A Strategy Based on Proven Partnerships

Partnering with SAF and Airtelis aligns with French civil security practices, which also collaborate with these providers for their fire-fighting missions. This is not merely an aircraft purchase but an integration into a comprehensive system, combining equipment, expertise, and logistics. The effectiveness of this model lies in its ability to delegate operations to operators with extensive field knowledge while retaining public control over tools. This allows the public sector to focus resources on strategic planning, ensuring execution by specialized professionals.

As Greece continues to face the challenges of climate change, innovative strategies such as this one exemplify how nations can adapt and strengthen their emergency response frameworks. As the world grapples with climate-related disasters, how can other countries learn from Greece’s approach to enhancing their own resilience and preparedness?
