In an extraordinary revelation beneath the ocean, a mysterious underwater volcano has divulged thousands of giant, vibrant eggs. Dubbed “mermaid’s purses,” these eggs belong to the elusive Pacific white skate, a marine species shrouded in mystery. This rare discovery, located off the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, underscores the hidden wonders of our ocean’s depths and the surprising ecosystems that thrive in such extreme environments. As researchers delve into this underwater marvel, they uncover secrets that could reshape our understanding of marine biodiversity and the life cycles of deep-sea creatures.

The Astonishing Revelation of an Active Underwater Volcano

The underwater volcano near Vancouver Island, thought dormant for ages, resurfaced dramatically during a 2019 expedition led by marine biologist Cherisse Du Preez. Rising approximately 3,600 feet from the ocean floor, this seamount lies around 0.93 to 0.99 miles beneath the ocean surface. The explorers discovered that the volcano emitted warm, mineral-rich waters, fostering an unexpectedly diverse marine ecosystem.

This geothermal activity is crucial for the development of the giant eggs, measuring 18 to 20 inches in width, which require an unusually long gestation period of four years. The volcanic warmth acts as a natural incubator, accelerating the developmental process and offering a head start to young Pacific white skates. This phenomenon showcases the intricate relationship between geological and biological processes beneath the sea.

Unique Traits of the Pacific White Skate

The Pacific white skate, scientifically known as Bathyraja spinosissima, inhabits the cold Pacific waters, dwelling at depths ranging from 2,600 to 9,500 feet. Females of this species lay large eggs, investing substantial energy to provide essential nutrients for their offspring, exemplifying marine gigantism. Adult skates can grow up to 6.5 feet long, highlighting their adaptation to the harsh conditions of the deep ocean.

The warmth from the volcano’s shallower summit creates an ideal environment, described by Cherisse Du Preez as “almost a coral garden and a safe nursery for juveniles before they descend into the deep.” This setting underscores the significant role these volcanic habitats play in the early life stages of skates. A similar phenomenon was observed in 2018 near the Galápagos Islands, where eggs over 4 inches were found near hydrothermal vents, suggesting that volcanic heat is a common resource for various marine species during incubation.

Implications for Marine Research and Biodiversity

The discovery of this active underwater volcano and its role as a natural nursery sheds light on the complexity of marine ecosystems. The warmth offered by these geothermal features supports a unique biodiversity, allowing scientists to study how such environments influence marine life development. The presence of these giant eggs in an active volcano suggests that underwater volcanic activity could be more significant in marine life cycles than previously understood. Such insights open new avenues for research into how these ecosystems can adapt and thrive despite the challenging conditions of the deep sea.

In 2023, a new expedition witnessed a Pacific white skate laying an egg at the Canadian site, revealing more about the reproductive behaviors of this enigmatic species. Scientists have also found evidence suggesting multiple species utilize this unique site as a natural nursery, indicating the broader ecological significance of such volcanic habitats.

The Future of Oceanic Exploration and Conservation

Understanding the intricate dynamics of these underwater ecosystems is crucial for marine conservation efforts. The discovery of the Pacific white skate’s breeding ground within an active volcano highlights the need to protect these fragile environments. As climate change continues to impact ocean temperatures and ecosystems, preserving these unique habitats becomes even more imperative.

Researchers and conservationists must work together to ensure the sustainability of these ecosystems, which serve as vital sanctuaries for marine life. Future explorations may uncover even more hidden secrets of the deep, challenging us to rethink our relationship with the ocean. What other mysteries lie beneath the waves, waiting to be discovered?

      • It is the realest picture of an underwater volcano, that also is an incubator for millions of 3ft eggs, that will hatch into roller blades one day..

      • Nothing about that “underwater volcano” looks realistic. The lava is still glowing and running downward…deep under frigid water…very little steam or bubbles, allowing this crystal clear image. Umm, nope. And none of these “eggs” are breaking, cracking, or exploding despite the “lava” flowing almost on top of them?

    • The picture is wrong. Go to National Geographic website for info about Pacific White Skates and deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Skates do not lay chicken eggs! They lay purses, like sharks! Breathtakingly amazing to read the article & realise it’s imports! It is wondrous how massive deep sea marine monsters like the giant White Skates & the colossal Squids have not only evolved in such seemingly unfriendly environs in the deep underbellies of Earth’s ocean floors & have used innovative ways to sustain themselves, through use of ingenious ways to support their reproduction efforts & improve the underlying biological processes, using the warmth and mineral richness of Geothermal vents & active Volcanic craters in the form of natural incubators have to offer!
      Seems surreal & mind boggling.

Fascinated to see how this self-destructs over my lifetime.

    • First of all thank you Genice Mejias for your observations.

But I have to tell you that you might be wrong.
Yes, there is such a thing as the Pacific white skate (Bathyraja spinosissima). It is not a white shark—they are entirely different species.

      Here’s the difference:
      • Pacific White Skate:
      • Scientific name: Bathyraja spinosissima
      • A type of deep-sea cartilaginous fish related to rays and stingrays
      • Known for laying large egg cases (often called “mermaid’s purses”)
      • Lives in cold, deep ocean environments, especially near hydrothermal vents or underwater volcanoes
      • Harmless to humans
      However the:
      • Great White Shark:
      • Scientific name: Carcharodon carcharias
      • A large predatory shark
      • Gives live birth, does not lay eggs
      • Lives in shallower coastal waters, not typically near hydrothermal vents

So yes, the article is correct in naming the Pacific white skate, and it is a real deep-sea species.

And might I add, that all credit to God for His wonderful design, creation and handiwork.
Every living thing and its design proves that there is a very powerful intelligent Creator behind it all and He has a purpose why He created these things. And the majority of scientists know that all living things were designed and as such must have an intelligent designer.
      Romans 1:20
“For his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship, so that they are inexcusable.”

  15. The image is AI generated this claim of it being a view is a lie and deceiving, it’s not even related to the content, where the sustainability claimed at this website while using a fake image? Gross

  16. The picture is AI created. First off there would be more steam bubbles coming from the lava flow, second, this are NOT mermaids purse eggs. I grew up near the ocean, I’ve seen my share of them.

  17. Tyson Vallner on

The mermaids purses aren’t the eggs themselves as you claim. They’re the pouches the eggs are inside of. That picture is so poorly done. Get better at using AI or at least spend 30 seconds researching your material.

I couldn’t be a journalist. It never would have occurred to me to have several photos of skate eggs and no photo of a skate. It must be a journalism school thing.

Its not hard to use ‘Breathtaking Discovery That Excites Marine Scientists’ as a title rather than clickbaiting. Also in the title ‘Thousands of Giant Living Eggs’ which is intentionally ominous to deceive readers into thinking that there a living dinosour eggs found in the ocean. This is classic bad faith journalism used to deceive readers.

  47. The image looked out of proportion so I checked and other sources say the Volcano is 30 Metres tall, not 3600 Ft, as it appears to imply here. Maybe the plumes rise to that height but the eggs are huge fir eggs and the Volcano, small for a Volcano.

  48. MW A Nonbelieverr on

There’s no such thing as “climate change”, “global warming” or man having any effect on the worlds temp. It’s a complicated result of positioning of the earth in space, the tilt of the earth on its axis, the sun’s sunspot activity and the amount of radiation from solar weather. What does warm the planet is these millionaires trying to block the sun by putting chemicals into the atmosphere. Thereby causing heating of the world by reflected heat as in the “greenhouse effect”. CO2 is of no consequence in the equation. It’s just another buzzword to be used to scare us. Educate yourself from other sources so you will see the truth

  49. What is with the image at the top of the article? You captioned it as if it’s a real picture of the eggs, but that’s not what their eggs look like at all. It’s obviously a 3D construction or AI generated (not very sustainability friendly if it’s the latter).

  50. I’m very amazed to read this information about the under water volcano with these eggs I’m really appreciate your efforts because if you don’t reveal this secret so how we know about this incubation center

  61. Why do you lie huh? Volcano under the deep sea water can never happen. The ocean is Heaven not the sky that’s why nobody dares to play God in the ocean , our Ancestors lies there that where we go for initiation. But you’ll never understand this you’re not a spiritual being

Amazing story ,so so much we’ve still to learn about this planet ,probably better looking at the oceans than space??.

  63. The first image has captions that make it seem like it’s a real picture… It’s pretty deceptive. Not sure if it’s on purpose or not, but the caption should really be changed

  64. The picture that draws you into reading the article is absolutely ridiculous. The eggs don’t look anything like that. They are encased in what is commonly referred to as a mermaid’s purse and are not referred to as a mermaid’s purse and are not round eggs. If the picture is deceptive how much of the article is deceptive? I’m removing sustainability times from my regular reading list.

  65. I can’t believe anyone would actually believe this AI generated picture. Its so fake. It’s like these journalists have nothing left to write about so they make stuff up.

  66. Why would you use such a misleading picture for your article with a misleading caption underneath it? Pacific White skate eggs look nothing like this! No where in your article does it say “artists rendition” but instead the caption reads “breathtaking view” leading the reader to believe this photo is real. So whilst fully engaged, thinking some sort of giant underwater egg laying chicken with fins and rollerblades exists (because honestly unless you’re a marine biologist or at very least enthusiast, no one knows what a skate is as far as the ocean goes), you add to their already understandable skepticism and use a horribly misleading photo and show an understand chicken farm? One of the worst articles I’ve ever read.

  67. Not a shred of proof. Where are the images and direct sources? There are other “science” stories that are even thinner in substance than this floating around just to float the facade of scientific determinism.

  68. It seems this article took some artistic liberties, or most likely used an AI image, as that is definitely not what skate eggs look like. The caption makes it sound like it is an actual photo.

  69. Naw see they’re playing w us…Google pacific white skate and tell me it doesn’t give you alien face grabber thing just like the egg pic.

  70. Marley's Ghost on

So that’s why the price of chicken eggs have risen in America, and probably Canada! They must be trying to speed – up hen production!

  71. Fake, says these eggs at just around 5000 feet deep below sea level but the goes on to say that the skates live at depths of 2600-9600 ft.

  72. The “photo” used for the article is AI generated. To use it as an eye catch is one thing, but to label it as an actual picture of the volcano puts the authenticity of your whole article in question. I know it’s fake because white skate fish eggs look nothing like what we’re used to eggs looking like.

    • Not Impressed on

This article appears to have been written by a child. The volcano “resurfaced in 2019” because apparently volcanos go diving, and who knew that they can “divulge” information? This is just another example of the nonsense published online…

  73. Why are you using a fake picture for your article??? Why not use the picture from the actual dive. The eggs aren’t giant like that. They aren’t even shaped like that either. Do better Rosemary Potter

    • Hi there
Question Is there an actually a photo of the one you spoke about?

Lastly what do you think the eggs are from what animal?
      Thank you
